Numbers, like human beings, can have many faces. Just like a person can appear to us with different faces, the same number can also be presented in many different ways. For example, the number three can appear in Arabic numerals (3), in Roman numerals (III), or as an abstract symbol (three dots, three circles, etc.); as a word belonging to various languages (three in English, tres in Spanish, drei in German, etc.). According to psychologists, understanding that a number is always itself despite appearing with different "faces" (or rather, different "codes") represents one of the foundations of mathematical cognition, which humans acquire (more or less) between the ages of three and six.

The NCT match-task evaluates our readiness (velocity and level of error) in unmasking (or rather recognizing) the same number despite its different "appearances." If administered and interpreted by a pro psychologist, the task can be used as a diagnostic test of the logical-mathematical cognitive functions of both adults and children. If used independently, however, it can only provide rough indications without any scientific validity. If repeated frequently over time, it can represent a quick and perhaps enjoyable exercise to keep the minds of both adults and children active.
