During the movement phase, pieces can move one square in any horizontal or vertical direction, but not diagonally. The central square is the only square on which diagonal moves are allowed. If a participant is unable to move, their opponent must take an extra turn and create an opening.
A participant can capture an enemy piece by trapping it between two of their own pieces, as long as the trap is made on opposite sides of the enemy piece. Diagonal entrapment does not count in this match. If a participant captures an enemy piece, they may continue to move the same piece to make further captures. If a participant's move results in two or three enemies becoming trapped simultaneously, then all of those trapped enemies are captured and removed from the board.
Players may move a piece between two enemies without harming the piece, but one of the enemies must move away and back again to effect a capture. The central square is immune from capture, but can be used to capture enemy pieces.
The match is won by the participant who captures all of their opponent's pieces.
