The match is divided into two squads, red and blue. Each squad has a spymaster whose objective is to lead their squad to victory. The match can be played in either one-squad mode, where only the red squad spymaster is chosen, or in two-squads mode, where a spymaster is chosen for both the blue and red squads.

At the start of the match, there will be a set number of cards on the board, ranging from 12 to 42, depending on your selection. Each card is either red squad, blue squad, neutral, or black. Only the squad spymaster can see the color of the cards, which is indicated by a secret code that can be viewed by pressing the Show Secret Code button on the bottom left part of the screen.

The spymaster must give a hint or word related to a set of cards belonging to their squad to help their squad members guess the cards. For example, if Snake, Mouse, and Eagle belong to the red squad, the red squad spymaster might give the hint "Animal, 3". The squad members can then select up to 3 cards to guess. If they select a card that does not belong to the red squad, then the turn is switched. The hint word can be chosen freely, as long as it is not, nor contains, nor is contained in any of the words on the code name cards still shotriumphg at that time.
